 Remove ISP settings: Macintosh

Different operating systems have different ways of finding files.

OS before 8.0: Use the finder program. This is by default open in the OS when no other programs are. In the upper right corner of the screen, the word "Finder" will be clearly displayed. Then go to File, then click on Find. This will bring up a search window. Make sure that "local hard disk" is selected, then type in "AOL" for the tile of what you're searching for. You'll see a list of results below, which will show what folder(s) the results are located in. The user will want to write down the paths of the files for reference as there is no way directly to remove the files for the search window. Repeat the process with "America Online" as the search choice to find all of these files as well. The process would work the same for the Juno/Compuserve types of ISP's as well. For OS 8.0 and later: The search utility is called "Sherlock" and can be found in the Apple menu. It works the same way as the Finder search detailed above.

To remove AOL software:
Move any folders labeled as AOL or America Online on the Macintosh Hard Disk to the Trash Bin

  • Go to systems folders, then go to extensions. Move any AOL extensions to the Extensions (Disabled) folder.
  • Reboot the Macintosh. If no problems occur, and the desktop loads normally with no errors, empty the Trash Bin (Special/Empty Trash).

To remove Prodigy, NetZero, Juno, CompuServe, etc.:

  • Move any folders labeled as Prodigy/NetZero/Juno/ CompuServe online on the Macintosh Hard Disk to the Trash Bin.
  • Go to systems folders, then go to extensions. Move any Prodigy/NetZero/Juno/CompuServe extensions to the Extensions (Disabled) folder.
  • Reboot the Macintosh. If no problems occur, and the desktop loads normally with no errors, empty the Trash Bin (Special/Empty Trash).

To remove any other Internet Service Provider (ISP) for Remote Access:

  • Normally, you can just remove the settings for the old ISP and replace them with Lifeline911 Netsquito's info. However, for a fresh configuration, Open Remote Access, then click on File, then click configuration. Choose "Default" for the list of configurations, then choose "copy". This will create a configuration called "Default" (copy). Highlight this profile, then choose "Make Active." Then choose "Rename", and rename the new profile "Lifeline911 Netsquito".

For a new TCP/IP configuration:

  • Open TCP/IP, then click on File, then click configuration. Choose "Default" for the list of configurations, then choose "copy". This will create a configuration called "Default" (copy). Highlight this profile, then choose "Make Active". Then choose "Rename", and rename the new profile "Lifeline911 Netsquito."

For FreePPP

  • Under Account Name in the FreePPP setup screen, choose "Untitled". This will void any current settings so new ones can be entered. Older MAC dialers (Open Transport, PPP) are designed for a single configuration. Just overwrite the old ISP settings with MiraclNet's settings and reboot.

Extracting Your Address Book From AOL

Switching Internet Service Providers shouldn't be difficult, and this step-by-step guide should allow you to make a seamless switch from your old ISP to Lifeline911 Netsquito. KEEP IN MIND, some ISP's will offer special discounts for one to 3 months to prevent you from canceling your account. Those deals may be tempting but none of those ISPs offer Lifeline911 Netsquito's blend of incentives instead of mindless pop-up ads.

Before you cancel your account with another ISP, you want to be sure to copy or save contact information for all your online friends and relatives.

Unfortunately, there is no way to automatically switch your email addresses from AOL to the email client you use with Lifeline911 Netsquito.
The easiest way will be to send an email from your AOL account to everybody in your address book and also enter your new Lifeline911 Netsquito email address in the "To" field. You can use this email to let your friends and contacts know that that your email address has changed and to ask them not to use your old AOL email address any more.
When you receive your copy of the email in your Lifeline911 Netsquito account, you can enter your friends addresses by doing the following:

For Outlook Express: Double click the email message to open it in another window. Double click each email address or name, and click the Add to Address Book button. You can then edit the address book entry. Click OK. You will need to do this for each contact in the email message.

For Netscape 4.x
: With the email message open, click the Message menu. Choose Add All to Address Book. Each contact will pop up individually allowing you to edit the information before it is added into the address book.

For Netscape 6
: With the email message open, click each email address and choose Add to address book. If necessary, edit the information then click OK. You will need to do this for each contact in the email message.

For all others
: Please refer to your email software help files.
For information about removing your contacts, old email messages, and favorites lists from AOL, please view the following article by CNET:

Note
: LifeLine Internet Corporation neither supports nor endorses the software that CNET suggests.Once you have all of the information out of your AOL program, you will want to cancel your account. Here are simple instructions to help you cancel your account with AOL and other major service providers:
